Gingerbread Houses

Here are a few pictures of our annual gingerbread house decorating. They ended up pretty sad looking, but it is for fun right? No Martha Stewart awards will be given, that is for sure. I have the picture of the kids helping, then I have the picture of the adults "finishing" up. We were trying to hold the roof on. Our gingerbread house didn't even make it to Dec. 19th. Next year we plan to break out the hot glue gun.

Love your new family photo. K, so this is how you get gingerbread to stick on contact - melt brown sugar. You'll need a metal spoon. I just melt mine on medium to medium high and then turn it down a bit when you see it go dark. Dip the edges in it and then stick it to whatever. The roof is a little trickier. You have to dip both of one side of the house in at a time so make sure you use a large pan for melting your sugar in. I always put the houses together on my own sans kids the day before. I've been putting them together this way for about 7 years and it really works! Then you get to spend way more time decorating. More fun for you! If you made the gingerbread yourself make sure and brush the flour off with a bottle brush or something a little stiff or the sugar will only stick to the flour and not the house. It would be nice to have something like a hot glue gun to more easily melt and distribute the hot sugar. Hmmmm....

I think it is very Martha of you to even try gingerbread houses. I can never make them work. The hot glue gun sounds like a good idea to me!
