Escape to Maui

84 degrees and sunny, that is all we see in the forecast. There was an Orthopedic CME conference that Kevin decided to take advantage of. I am always game for a trip to Hawaii, especially if someone else pays for a portion of it.  We arranged for Grandma Kellogg to come wrangle the little Kellogg's and we were headed to Maui for 8 days of warmth. We drove from Spokane to Seattle at the crack of before dawn and caught our flight which landed us in Maui late afternoon. We got the rental car and went to Kihei to drop off our stuff and go explore and wander the beach. There is something about the sunset in Hawaii. We tried to find a different location/beach to watch the sunset every night.

Day 1-

Kevin had his heart set on mountain biking in Maui so we rented some mountain bikes from Maui Cyclery in Pahi and then we went up to the Makawao Forest Reserve.  The biking was only so so, but it is always cool to say you mountain biked in Maui.  It was fun to bike through the tree canopy and the jungle atmosphere, and there was some cool scenery.  After our biking adventure, we explored the coast line and the location of the famous Jaws surf.  After we had our fill of wave watching, we headed up to Haleakala to take in the sunset above the clouds.  There is something really amazing to drive up above the clouds and look down into them.  The cloud formation and color is beautiful.  It was brrrr cold at 10,000 feet as we waited for the sun to set, but it was well worth it.

-Our first sunset in Maui.  This is taken not far from our hotel, 1st of may sunset pictures for this trip.
-Makawao forest reserve

-Some of the cool moss covered rocks headed up this ravine

-The leaves covering the ground reminded me of fall riding...but it was WINTER!!!  Happy place for us that is for sure.
-Standing on the cliffs over looking jaws

-Watching the surfers and sea turtles at Ho'okipa beach

-I love this picture of Kevin overlooking the clouds-this was at a lookout as we were headed up Haleakala.

-Looking into the cloud covered crater-in a matter of 30 minutes these clouds were gone and you could see more of the landscape
-Our sunset selfie from the top of Haleakala.
-Going, Going, gone.  Dropping into the clouds-so pretty
-The sun swimming in clouds
